A bone to pick with magazines
Wednesday, 01 August 2012 14:59

You may or may not know that I am a bit of magazine hoarder. After beauty products, clothes and outdated whitewater gear, magazines are hardest for me to part with. I have way too many subscriptions, and nothing makes me happier than a Sunday morning with a perfectly brewed americano in one of Amy’s mugs, and a pile of magazines.

I tend to read them backwards. I know it’s weird, but I do. And I fold down pages of interest to return to again and again, over the course of the month. Then I tear out certain pages for inspiration. I have a total method, although to anyone on the outside, it seems completely random. I do get rid of them after a few months, but the pile remains roughtly the same height. I do keep them in a gorgeous box, if that helps.

My favorites, which have remained favorites for many years, are Allure, Glamour, Marie Claire, Les Nouvelles Esthétiques, Whole Living, Organic Spa and First for Women. The last one seems odd, but it’s  a great magazine. Lots of studies are quoted, and then I research the study they mention. First, you’ve got a fan in me.

The whole point of this blogpost is because I have a bone to pick with all of these magazines this month.

They’ve all been talking about skincare secrets for summer, and there's great info in all of them right now. Definitely invest in this month’s issues. It’s a good one. September is the obvious, but I like August. It’s usually the last summery feeling issue. There’s great hair info, great face info, ways to keep feet healthy. For the rest of the body? How to cover up cellulite and apply self-tanner. And look 10lbs thinnner. That’s about it.

The products mentioned are sunscreen and simple oil emulsion moisturizers, not really products packed (PACKED) with antioxidants and collagen enhancing ingredients (yes, like BijaBody). Anti-aging Body Care. Not just moisturizing. There's more to slowing down aging than sunscreen. There’s no talk about the little nooks and crannies that tend to age a little bit faster, and get used a little bit more and so deserve a little more care. Examples: the nook between your neck and your shoulder, the crease on the top of your arm, near the elbow, and on your wrist, the top of the belly, right below the breasts, which tends to wrinkle a little quicker from normal wear , tear and gravity, the tops of the knees, and the very middle of your chest. There’s no mention about correct Alpha Lipoic Acid or Tea Extract concentrations for true protection, or the difference between the botanical oils for cellular regeneration.

It’s just really young models, with perfectly applied self-tanner, in cute cover-ups, looking 10lbs thinnner.

So there it is. My bone. We are more than just a pretty face. We love awesome outfits, particularly ones that reveal a sliver of skin in the summer. And, just because you’re over 30, or 40, or 50, or 60, doesn’t mean you cover everything up and apply self-tanner. You take care of it. The whole time. So when you are hanging out around 70, like several of my brazilian aunts, you still let your sweater slip over your shoulder a little, you still wear a gorgeous pair of neck grazing earrings. Because when you were 30, you didn’t just take care of your face, hair, feet and hands. You took care of your Self: whole body, whole soul.

This model, by the way, has been a client of mine for over a decade. She is all over our website. She is hot. Seriously. And has taken care of her whole self the whole time.

Remember that next time you pick up a fancy face moisturizer, and a tub of body lotion for $3.99 in the discount bin.

Bone picked. xo, Melissa
