Self-Tanners Rock. Missoula's lack of sunshine does not.
Wednesday, 23 May 2012 12:46

In Missoula, we get about two seconds of sunshine. My BF thinks I’m overly snarky about our lack of real sunshine. To this I scoff, remind him I’m from places that get lots of sunshine, and that I’m here in part because of him. (Which is mostly true, although Missoula is pretty awesome.)

By the time June rolls around, and I’m still pasty, I crave bronze. I know as an esthetician I’m not supposed to like a tan, but I do. I like a bit of bronze. Not the crispness you get from being outside in the very middle of the day. The golden glow you get from 20 minutes early morning. I adore it. I think it’s good for you.marissa_miller

But, we don’t have enough sun in Missoula, and I sometimes resort to self-tanning.

The most effective self-tanners products available contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. It is sourced from sugar beets and cane, and is part of that funny gray area I call “Natural(ish)”. It is sometimes marketed as natural, but there is way too much lab time for it to really be so.

Regardless, it is non-toxic. It’s the base DHA is used in that’s sometimes troublesome.

So tan up if you want to tan up! Zia makes a good sunless tanner that is more towards natural, but ends up a bit orange. Jergen’s is the sunless tanner I reach for, because it gives me the prettiest color. The ingredient list isn’t gorgeous. The tan is.

Here’s my tips and tricks:

Dry-Brush
Daily Body Scrub in shower.
Layer of Daily Body Serum all over. Not only will this moisturize, but it’s an antioxidant layer to minimize funky behavior form the not so great ingredients in Jergen’s. Protection, if you will. It also prevents bad streaking.

Apply self-tanner, being very light handed on knees, elbows, underarms, etc. Let dry a few minutes while you drink your Beauty Tea (I put on a light robe). Wash your hands really well.

Follow with a layer of BijaBody’s Anti-Aging Body Treatment, and you’re ready to go. A couple days of this, and you’re skin will be perfectly bronzed.

Oh, and remember the carrot consumption! 5 carrots a day increases the golden glow of your skin and provides a natural, internal spf. Check out this pic: Middle one os natural color. Screen Left is a tan. Screen Right is from carotenoids. Sweet, right?!
